Additionally analysts expect online sales to continue to grow as a share of overall retail sales, driving growth in the number of goods that would need to navigate the complexities of the last mile. 3 This could put pressure on the last-mile providers to move an increasing volume of goods through the network. Additionally, an increase in online sales would generate an
Businesses are racing to develop new technologies and experimental supply chain models to increase parcel volume, expedite deliveries, and delight the challenge of final mile delivery continues to be a massive pain point for you work in the transportation and logistics industry? Get business insights on the latest tech innovations, market trends, and your competitors with data-driven research. As consumers increasingly turn to ecommerce for all their shopping needs, speedy fulfillment and distribution isn’t just a “nice to have”—it’s the expectation of every online shopping experience. And if logistics companies and their retail partners want a shot at thwarting the ever-looming threat of Amazon Prime, it needs to be a priority. As a result, businesses have begun racing to develop new technologies and experimental supply chain models to increase parcel volume, expedite deliveries, and delight customers — all while trying to cut costs. Unfortunately, one of their biggest expenses and challenges is same-day, final mile delivery. What is last mile delivery? In a product’s journey from warehouse shelf, to the back of a truck, to a customer doorstep, the “last mile” of delivery is the final step of the process — the point at which the package finally arrives at the buyer’s door. In addition to being a key to customer satisfaction, last mile delivery is both the most expensive and time-consuming part of the shipping process. What is the last mile problem? If you’ve ever tracked a package in real time online and saw that it was “out for delivery” for what felt like forever, you already understand that the last mile problem is inefficiency. That’s because the final leg of shipment typically involves multiple stops with low drop sizes. In rural areas, delivery points along a particular route could be several miles apart, with only one or two packages getting dropped off at each one. In cities, the outlook isn’t much better; what urban areas make up for in stop proximity is quickly negated by the near constant delays of traffic congestion. The costs and inefficiencies of the last mile problem have only been further compounded by the continuous rise of ecommerce in US retail sales, which has dramatically increased the number of parcels delivered each day, as well as raised customer expectations to include not just fast, but also free, delivery. What are the costs of last mile delivery? As a share of the total cost of shipping, last mile delivery costs are substantial—comprising 53% overall. And with the growing ubiquitousness of “free shipping,” customers are less willing to foot a delivery fee, forcing retailers and logistics partners to shoulder the cost. As such, it’s become the first place they’re looking to implement new technologies and drive process improvements. Like what you’re reading? Technology solutions to improve last mile logistics With the rise of the gig economy, many consumers are already familiar with the concept of crowdsourcing local services through digital platforms like Uber, Airbnb, and Postmates. Location-based crowdsourcing allows consumers to open a mobile app to hail a ride, book a place to stay, order coffee to the office, hire a handyman to mount a TV, send flowers to that special someone, or even schedule takeout to arrive just as they’re walking through their apartment door. Postmates Rafael Henrique/SOPA The crowdsourcing model has been prevalent in transportation, hospitality, and food delivery for some time now, and retailers are eyeing its low startup costs, asset-light operations, and improved customer experience to ease their last mile delivery woes. With crowdsource technology, retailers, logistics partners, and consumers can connect directly with local, non-professional couriers who use their own transportation to make deliveries. Companies can get their online orders to customers faster, and customers can get their items when and where they want them. The freedom to make on-demand and scheduled deliveries also ensures that customers are home at the time of delivery—eliminating the need for a second or third attempt. And with the ongoing integration and enhancement of automation across industries, it’s likely we’ll start seeing delivery robots, drones, and self-driving vehicles making many of these drop-offs in the not-so-far future. The Sony studio addresses working conditions in a new concerns about crunch culture remain at the forefront of the games industry, Naughty Dog's leaders are speaking out about what they're doing to assess working conditions at their own for franchises like Uncharted, The Last of Us, Crash Bandicoot, and Jak & Daxter, Naughty Dog has been a prominent force in the AAA development scene for the two decades. However, ahead of one of 2020's biggest releases, The Last of Us Part II, reports began to emerge about instances of crunch culture within Naughty Dog's ranks. After the game was delayed, developers anonymously said the delay led to sustained crunch rather than more breathing room. Naughty Dog co-presidents Evan Wells and Neil Druckmann spoke to Game Informer about how the studio is working to move forward and make changes after last year's reports of says Naughty Dog is assessing ways the studio can improve, including evaluating the well-being of Naughty Dog employees by looking at how many hours employees are working and how much stress they're feeling, among other factors."Everybody has a different definition of what crunch means," Druckmann said. "We find that there is no one solution that fits everybody. Everybody has a unique situation we might need to address."Game Informer also asked Wells and Druckmann about unionization. Wells said he hasn't put a lot of thought into it, and doesn't know if it would be a solution to crunch. Druckmann says the studio has tried to implement anti-crunch solutions in the past, but a one-size-fits-all solution doesn't always lead to results."... we’ve said, 'Okay, no working past this hour,' or, 'It’s mandatory that no one can work on Sunday,' and they’re always a lot of corner cases of someone saying, 'Well, I couldn’t work on Friday because I had to be with my kids. It’s actually more convenient for me to come in on Sunday.' When you try to have a silver bullet, like one solution, you’re always leaving someone behind. That’s why we feel like we need multiple solutions. We have to approach this from multiple angles."Wells also spoke on the topic of strict work limits, saying, "If we had some sort of restriction where when the clock strikes 40 hours the servers shut down and you can’t work anymore, that would frustrate people to no end. There are people who really want to put in that extra polish on their own volition, and they would feel handcuffed."The interview has drawn criticism in some corners, with one games media member calling Wells and Druckmann's responses "wishy-washy," and others saying Naughty Dog missed an opportunity to make themselves look decent. However, Naughty Dog environmental artist Anthony Vaccaro pushed back against these assertions, calling the effort to address crunch at Naughty Dog "dramatic."It remains to be seen how Naughty Dog will adjust to the reports of crunch among its employees. Crunch remains a common problem in video game development. In the initial part of the game the only such weapon is a pistol with a silencer, but in the later part of the campaign you can also get a bow and character can hide in the high grass, although it is not 100% effective if you want to avoid of being detected. If you want to make it even harder for your opponents to locate your character, lay back on the ground. However, this action will very clearly limit your on dodges in melee combat, which can be activated by pressing L1 button. They have two main uses - to protect your character against the melee attacks of your opponent, or to avoid being caught by an enemy. FAQMultiplayer - is it available in the game? No. There is no multiplayer mode in the current version of The Last of Us Part II. TLoU 2 only has a single player campaign to offer. Multiplayer will be available in the future. However, details about this mode have been shrouded in mystery at the moment. The Last of Us Part II is a much longer game than its predecessor and players shouldn't complain about the lack of content in the newest production of Naughty Dog studio. The lack of multiplayer may also be considered as good news for trophy hunters - the Platinum trophy can be earned just by playing the single player mode. Game length - how long is the story campaign of TLoU 2?The game is clearly longer than the first part of The Last of Us - it should take about 25-30 hours to complete the campaign for the first time, assuming that you will spend some time exploring your locations and that you won't play on the lowest difficulty level. For more information about the length of the game and its main attractions, check another page of our guide - How long does it take to run-through The Last Of Us 2?. Platinum trophy - is it hard to get it?Earning the platinum trophy in The Last of Us Part II should be much easier than in the first part. This is due to two main factors - in TLoU2 there are no trophies related to multiplayer content or trophies related to difficulty levels. The game can be played on any difficulty level, including the lowest level. Most trophies available in The Last Of Us Part II consist in finding secrets and improving the equipment of the controlled character. However, there are no trophies in the game that would require you to grind. For more information, check out our trophy guide, in which we have described every available trophy in detail. Co-op - is it available in the game? No, TLoU2 does not offer co-op mode and is designed for 1 player only. As in the case of the first part, the character we control may be accompanied in some stages by a partner controlled by artificial intelligence. In Ellie's case, it could be Dina. Unfortunately, you cannot give any commands to the AI companion, but it doesn't make any huge mistakes or flaws during the gameplay. You also don't have to protect your companion all the time. Only in extreme situations his or her life may be in danger. Chapter selection feature - is it available in the game? Yes, TLoU 2 includes "chapter select" feature. In the main menu you can choose which section of the main campaign you want to play, for example, to replay a particular chapter. As you select different chapters and stages, the game displays information about found items and achievements in the selected difficulty level. You can easily identify the stages where you haven't gained 100% of the secrets yet and repeat them in order to collect the omitted collectibles. A list of all stages can be found on the first page of our walkthrough of The Last of Us 2. Jumping on command - can you jump in the game? Yes, one of the novelties in The Last of Us 2 is the addition of a dedicated button for jumping - this is the X button. The main application of this action is to jump over smaller and larger gaps. It is worth noting that some locations require long jumps - in such cases jump button must be pressed during sprint you must hold the L1 button. Additionally, jump will only succeed if you activate it just before reaching the edge of the floor from which you have to bounce off. Choices - can I make any decisions in the game? No, the story campaign in The Last Of Us Part II is linear. You don't have any impact on the main story. TLoU2 does not allow you to choose any ending this game has only 1 ending. Also, you can't decide which characters you would like to spare or save them from misfortune. Open world - is there complete freedom of exploration? No, TLoU 2 is not a game with an open world that you could explore freely, as in Horizon Zero Dawn or Days Gone. However, should be noted that some locations in the game are semi-open. This means that different paths can lead to your destination and you can explore locations which are not connected to the main plot. The most open stage in the game is Seattle downtown, which we discussed in more detail in our world atlas. It is a fairly extensive location where you can move freely. The controlled character does not have to focus on the main storyline right away, but can explore optional spots first. Stages with a similar structure had already appeared in the previous games developed by Naughty Dog. A similar scheme was available during the Western Ghats chapter in Uncharted The Lost Legacy. Obstacle in the way - why can't I get past it? As you explore the game world, you may encounter obstacles, such as fallen trees or fortifications similar to those in the picture above. The controlled character may not be able to bypass this type of obstacles and it's not a bug in the game, but a deliberate blockade set by game designers. The solution to this problem is very simple - you have to mount a horse and jump over an obstacle. HUD - can I deactivate it completely? Yes, The Last of Us 2 allows you to disable the entire user interface or only selected elements of the HUD. You must go to the HUD tab in game options. TLoU 2 allow you, among other things, to hide the crosshair, health and ammunition information, hints, interaction icons or button icons displayed during combat. Young Ellie - does she appear in the game? Yes, despite the fact that for most of the campaign an adult Ellie is present, a young heroine also appears in selected scenes of the game. During this stages her appearance looks similar to the one known from the first part of the series. However, Ellie's model in TLoU 2 is much more detailed. Climbing stages - are they present in the game? Yes, in some locations of the game you have to complete climbing sequences. Fortunately, they are not very complex and serve more as a variety of gameplay than an integral part of it. As you climb you may be forced to use a rope or make a long jump. In the latter case, you should be careful, because a fall from a high height after a badly measured jump may result in a fall into an abyss and death of the character. For more information and advice, check out the Exploration chapter of our guide. Vehicles - can I drive them? There are various vehicles in TLoU 2 - they are used by members of the WLF to travel around Seattle. Unfortunately, you can't drive in cars, although in several stages you will have to shoot from the passenger seat. The only fully interactive vehicle is the boat, which is primarily used during The Flooded City stage played as Ellie. The heroine uses a boat in the aforementioned mission to travel through flooded areas. The majority of the boat section is linear, although there are several larger areas with optional locations you can explore. New game mode+ - does the game have it? Yes, The Last of Us 2 features a New Game Plus mode - you unlock it after completing the game on any difficulty. The NG+ mode allows you to transfer your earned upgrades and equipment. This should make it easier to replay the game and get trophies for improving all weapons and unlocking all passive skills. Swimming - can heroes swim? Yes, Ellie and Abby can swim - you have to do this to reach certain locations. Furthermore, playable characters are also able to dive in selected locations. You may need to do this to reach a neighboring location or, for example, to find a secret or some valuable loot lying at the bottom. Controls Movement. Looking at important locations - this is only possible if there is an important building visible in the distance. Navigation aids - you need to have this feature activated when choosing the difficulty level. Holding breath - only available if you have unlocked this passive ability. The skill makes it easier to fire accurate shots. Looking around. Turning flashlight on / off - the infected do not respond to the flashlight being turned on, but the living opponents do. Photo Mode - you must first unlock this shortcut in the control options Photo Mode Shortcut. Dodge. Sprint - hold the button to sprint. Aiming weapon/throwable - you need to hold the button. Crouch. You can view any collectibles you've discovered by pushing the touchpad when you're in-game, and using the R1 button to browse to the collectibles sub-section. Artefacts are generally written notes and other pieces of lore-related ephemera you'll find in the world. They're typically represented by an icon showing a sheet of paper, signifying that they can be collected. Trading Cards function similarly to Artefacts, though they have their own symbol within the world and are categorised separately in Ellie's backpack. They are Ellie's main form of collectible. Coins are similar to Trading Cards, however they represent Abby's primary form of collectible. They're represented in the world by two overlapping pennies. Journal Entries are generally added automatically to Ellie's notepad, however there are a handful of moments where you'll need to interact with parts of the world in order to ensure she scribbles her thoughts down. These are considered one of the game's collectible types. Workbenches are where you can upgrade your weapons using spare parts that you scavenge from the world. You simply need to look at these in order to "collect" them, however we recommend interacting with them just to ensure they get added to your checklist. You're also probably going to want to upgrade your weapons each time you find one anyway. Safes are storage units that contain key valuable items, but you'll need to know the correct safe code combination in order to open them. Typically, the clues are written in Artefacts that you'll find nearby, but be prepared to use both the environment and your ol' grey matter in order to solve the puzzles. The Last of Us 2 has a total of 11 acts, divided into 45 chapters, although not all of them have collectbiles in them. The Last of Us 2 FAQ - Everything You Need to Know The Last of Us 2 Full Story Recap The Last of Us 2 Guide Tips and Tricks for Beginners The Last of Us 2’s wide-array of difficulty options mean you shouldn’t have too much trouble finishing the game, regardless of your ability. However, there are some universal tips and tricks that we’d recommend to all players. Read through these carefully to ensure you’re prepared. Always Reload and Craft During Downtime You should endeavour to reload and craft any materials during moments of downtime, as these will ensure you’re always prepared for conflict. There are moments during The Last of Us 2 where you’ll be ambushed by Clickers or rival factions, and sometimes these encounters can catch you off guard. Keep your weapon magazines as full as possible and your backpack well supplied with key items, such as health packs and explosives. You’ll regret not utilising these periods of peace effectively if you don’t. Never Face Danger Head On Under no circumstances should you ever run towards danger, as you’ll be taken out immediately. Rival humans’ aim will improve when you run towards them, and the stopping power of their weapons means you’ll struggle to make meaningful progress anyway. It’s better to run away from potential conflict; use stealth to get the jump on your enemies, saving valuable resources and utilising the element of surprise to your advantage. Ensure you’re always moving, but try to attack enemies from behind or from the side. Similar rules apply to Clickers, although discretion should be your main focus when fighting the infected, so try to restrict the use of your firearms to emergencies only – at least until you’ve thinned their numbers. Crouch to Dampen Your Footsteps If you want to remain quiet, then you’re going to want to crouch as much as possible. Delicately pushing the thumb stick while in a crunched position will ensure you’re virtually silent, but remember you can also go prone if you need to hide either under cars or in tall grass. Remember, concealing yourself in foliage doesn’t make you invincible like in other games, but you’re much more difficult to spot and this can buy you time if you need to use health kits or take a breather for a few minutes. Use Distractions to Your Advantage Bottles and bricks are great for smashing glass and stunning enemies, but they can also be used to push and pull enemies around. Use these items to create distractions and diversions, or lure infected into areas where there are human foes. If you can successfully pit Clickers against gun-wielding gangs, then you can significantly thin their numbers, reducing the amount of resources you’ll require to finish them off entirely. You Don’t Always Have to Engage Fighting is fun albeit harrowing in The Last of Us 2, but one tip is that you don’t always have to attack. If your resources are low and your energy levels are depleted, consider using stealth to slip past your enemies undetected. While there are some encounters where you’ll have no option but to fight, many others can be approached completely clandestine, and if you’re successful you’ll never have to use a single bullet. If you struggle at stealth then remember that you can craft silencers for your pistols, allowing you to pick off select enemies without attracting any attention. A Collectibles Tracker Can Be Enabled If you’re playing through The Last of Us 2 on New Game + and you’re searching for any outstanding collectibles, it’s worth switching on the Collectibles Tracker in the Settings menu. This allows you to keep track of which collectibles you’ve found in previous runs, so you know which ones you need in order to unlock that all-important Platinum Trophy. And that brings our The Last of Us 2 guide to a conclusion. Hopefully, this has helped you to get the most out of Naughty Dog’s touching post-apocalyptic tale. If you have any further tips and tricks to share, please post them in the comments section below.

Home Gaming News Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann Says There is 'No One Solution' to Crunch Naughty Dog co-presidents Neil Druckmann and Evan Wells discuss the studio’s battle with crunch culture, rejecting a 'silver bullet' solution. Crunch-time is practically the industry standard in game development. It’s a problem that doesn’t seem to go away, no matter how much attention it gets. Last year reports emerged that Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us 2 saw an intense crunch period despite its delayed release. Naughty Dog's co-president Neil Druckmann commented on the issues during one recent interview. However, he acknledged the problem but rejected the notion of a simple solution. Druckmann and and fellow co-president Evan Wells made ther remaks during an interview with Ben Reeves from Game Informer. The conversation covered a range of topics before eventually landing on the question of crunch time. Wells and Druckmann discussed various steps the studio is taking. These included taking on additional management to ensure current Naughty Dog projects are progressing smoothly. The studio is also working on creating more opportunities for employee feedback. Druckmann also explained that Naughty Dog’s leadership is also working harder to watch how employees handle stress and the workload. Reeves then asked about unionization, an often-suggested answer to the problem of AAA crunch time. Wells and Druckmann largely dismissed the idea, expressing skepticism of unionization as a solution. As Druckmann explained, Naughty Dog has attempted in the past to create policies that prevented crunch. However, he argued these sorts of companywide changes inevitably lead to unforeseen complications. Druckmann gave the example of Naughty Dog not letting developers work on Sundays, only for staff to complain that it disrupts their established schedules. He argued that situations like that are why Naughty Dog can’t just end crunch with a single policy change. “We find that there is no one solution that fits everybody,” Says Druckmann. “Everybody has a unique situation we might need to address.” Responses to Wells’ and Druckmann’s statements have seen mixed reactions. Some, like Fanbyte contributor Kenneth Shepard, criticized the answers as “wishy-washy.” Shepard also rejected a claim from Wells that Naughty Dog could not simply implement a 40-hour workweek, pointing out that it is standard practice in many other industries. However, others, such as Naughty Dog environmental artist Anthony Vaccaro pushed back, defending the company’s efforts at reducung Naughty Dog's overreliance on crunch time. Regardless, crunch culture has been a real issue with AAA developers for some time. Ubisoft, BioWare, Rockstar, and CD Project Red have faced similar criticisms for relying on crunch time to hit unrealistic deadlines. It seems only time will tell if Naughty Dog produces real solutions to the rampant overwork of game developers. MORE Joel’s Growth in The Last of Us Franchise Explained Source Game Informer
